For projects that call for custom millwork, JannaHouse Design collaborates with Cross&Miter, a bespoke woodworking studio in the Hudson Valley, New York.
High above the Hudson Valley, Sunset House pairs sweeping 360 degree Catskill and Berkshire mountain views with a warm, contemporary country aesthetic. This midcentury, two-family came to us without so much as a staircase between floors. The home needed everything! Using a nature-inspired palette and a quiet, sophisticated design centered on the expansive views and landscape, JannaHouse began by adding a dark bronze, standing-seam metal roof, enlarging, reshaping, and replacing all of the 1966 home’s windows and doors, and residing with cement fiber clapboard. The casement window redesign brought the surrounding mountains into nearly every room.
At the heart of the home, we built a new fireplace, created a custom kitchen with rich, cognac cabinetry and custom, black walnut millwork that we combined with a Calacatta Verde marble backsplash, quartz countertops, and sculptural, raw brass hardware and lighting to create a space that feels elegant, meditative, and deeply grounded. We focused on balance with this home, marrying clean midcentury modern lines with classic, country materials. We reimagined a primary suite, and two baths grew into three, and all were gutted and redesigned to combine hand-cut fireclay and terracotta tile, marble and quartzite finishes, custom vanities, polished nickel hardware, deep soaking tubs, storage closets and generous walk-in showers.
Outside we worked with a local landscape/hardscape architect to revive the abandoned pool and weedy gravel yard. We added a new bluestone terrace and bluestone pool coping, exterior lighting and plantings, a modern pool house, and we revived the ailing lawn and grounds. The result is a midcentury modern, rural retreat that feels polished yet relaxed, designed around the rituals of everyday life, and from within, feels like it floats in the sky.
Perched on one of the most picturesque lakes in the region, this once dark and dated, manufactured home now radiates warmth, light and effortless style. We reimagined the kitchens and the three full baths, installed wide board wood flooring throughout and installed a few skylights to brighten the space. Our goal was to bring the home a soul, transforming a contemporary, cookie-cutter structure into a hip, luxury retreat, while orienting the flow toward the natural beauty of the land and lake. The glorious sunsets are free of charge!
This historic Victorian home already had craftsmanship, natural light and wide, sweeping views of the Hudson River. However, this home also had a handful of unnecessary interior walls and low ceilings working against its natural flow and magical setting. Our complete gut renovation began with a newly-constructed, glass entryway to unite the original stone carriage barn with the old house beside it, creating a seamless flow between old and new and adding enough square footage for two additional bedrooms and an enormous, light-filled family room. We vaulted ceilings, added skylights, installed new, oak floors, and created a dreamy chef's kitchen and three custom-built bathrooms. Bespoke millwork, luxury fixtures, premium appliances, and a carefully layered mix of antiques and modern pieces bring richness, texture and timeless sophistication to every room.
Set on a deep, quiet lake in southern Columbia County, this deeply personal renovation reflects the evolution of a family and the landscape that surrounds it. What began as a four box manufactured home delivered to the site in 2007 became the designer’s own family residence after she and her husband (the original homeowner) married and blended their family of seven. During a full-scale renovation completed during the pandemic, the team reimagined every inch of the home, finishing the basement to create additional bedrooms and adding a bathroom, transforming the kitchen, and designing, fabricating and installing custom millwork from live edge butternut and black walnut slabs the designer's husband—a local forester and land use consultant—milled from regional wood. Each of the children's bedrooms was customized to express their individual personality. We used natural materials, thoughtful craftsmanship, and layered interior design to create a home that feels deeply rooted in family life, while giving chilled out, summer camp, lake life vibes.
